History of 248 Essex
248 Essex Street, Salem, MA
Our location at 248 Essex Street in Salem, is a Greek Revival structure built around 1834. Over the years, this area has been a bustling commercial hub, reflecting Salem's rich maritime history and evolving economic landscape. The building that includes 248 Essex Street was constructed around 1834 for Thorndike Proctor as a mixed-use building with commercial shops on the ground floor and likely residential space above. Proctor himself was listed as a goldsmith on the deed for this land (which his family had owned since 1790) and was involved in maritime trade, so it’s likely the space was intended for retail or artisanal/commercial use right from the start.
