Diehl Marcus Manor is located at 11 Central St in Salem. It was built in 1811 by notable architect Charles Bulfinch for the Essex Bank, the first bank established in Essex County. The Federal style brick building boasts an impressive granite double staircase entry, arched windows and ornate cornice mouldings.

While the Essex Bank maintained the first floor for its bank rooms and offices, the second floor housed a variety of tenants including: F.W. Putnam, the first curator of the Peabody Academy of Science, and the library and lecture hall of The American Association of the Advancement of Science.

The third floor was utilized as a storage and rooms for residential staff, while the basement functioned at varying times, Bank vaults, a printing press and even the federal Customs House (1811-1813).

About 100 years later it was donated to a church who then designated it to be a Boys Club called “The Salem Fraternity” (1899-1990).

Although altered throughout its 200-year history, the building still maintains key original details, such as fireplace surrounds, columns, murals, and vault doors. This historic and charming building is significantly noted at the only remaining Bulfinch building in Salem.
